Meet Herbalist Genessa Zickefoose: Supporting Midlife Women Through Nature, Nervous System Care & Herbal Wisdom

Hi Reader,

One of the things I appreciate most about being part of the Konenki Menopause Solutions network is connecting with practitioners who truly understand the complexity of the midlife transition — not just physically, but emotionally, mentally and energetically as well.

This week, I’d love to introduce you to Genessa Zickefoose, founder of The Mother Hive LLC — an herbalist whose work focuses on supporting women through perimenopause and menopause using a compassionate, nervous-system-centered approach.

What I especially appreciate about Genessa’s philosophy is that she recognizes something many midlife women intuitively feel: menopause is not simply about hormones. The nervous system plays a huge role in how we experience this transition.

Things like sleep disruption, anxiety, overwhelm, burnout, brain fog, irritability, digestive issues, and even feeling overstimulated by noise or stress can all become amplified during midlife.

Genessa’s work blends herbal support, education, nervous system regulation and practical wellness strategies in a way that feels grounded and supportive rather than overwhelming.

A Journey Back to Nature

Genessa’s relationship with herbalism began in childhood through time spent outdoors with her family — foraging, gardening and learning about medicinal plants from her mother.

She shared that some of the first plants she learned to identify included red clover, violet and wood sorrel. But like many women balancing work, family and daily life, she eventually felt disconnected from herself and from nature.

During the pandemic, she found herself struggling physically and emotionally and felt called back to the forest and the healing power of nature.

Spending time outdoors became deeply restorative for her nervous system and ultimately inspired her to formally study herbalism so she could better support others navigating stress, burnout and midlife transitions.

I think many women reading this can probably relate to that feeling of needing to slow down, reconnect and support the body in a gentler way during this phase of life.

Why Midlife Women?

Genessa explained that her own perimenopause journey played a major role in shaping the work she does today.

Like many women, she found herself searching for support that addressed the whole person — not just lab numbers or isolated symptoms.

She also recognized that many practitioners overlook how deeply connected the nervous system is to the menopausal experience.

Genessa also saw a gap in care for neurodivergent people (those who may experience heightened sensory sensitivity, nervous system overwhelm, ADHD, autism spectrum traits or different ways of processing stress and stimulation), who are looking for nervous system support alongside hormone and physical support.

Her approach is both compassionate and evidence-informed, blending lived experience with extensive training.

Closing Thoughts

One of the things I continue to emphasize in my own work is that midlife women often don’t need more punishment, restriction or pressure.

They need support.

They need education.

They need tools that help the body feel safe enough to heal and regulate again.

That’s why I’m always grateful to connect this community with practitioners like Genessa who approach women’s health through a more holistic and compassionate lens.

THE ENZYME OF LIFEWhat a Broken Refrigerator Taught Me About Aging My refrigerator stopped working last week. I had to find a quick solution so my food wouldn't go bad. As luck would have it, the apartment directly across from me was empty and being renovated, so my building manager said I could use the refrigerator there for the time being. Living in a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with two other people can make life... how shall I say?... a little too close for comfort with no...
