Stubborn midsection weight? Your liver might be the missing link

A Little-Known Bile Acid That Could Help Reverse Fatty Liver + Insulin Resistance

Hi Reader,

What if your liver is the missing link?

By the time many women reach midlife, something shifts.

Weight becomes harder to move.
Blood sugar feels less stable.
Energy dips… even when you’re doing “all the right things.”

And underneath it all?

Often… it’s the liver.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become incredibly common—and it’s tightly linked to insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction.

So if your metabolism feels “stuck,” your liver may be part of the conversation.

A quick personal note (because I’ve been here too)

At one point, I leaned heavily into a carnivore-style approach.

And while that way of eating can work well for some people…
it didn’t work the same way for me.

I ended up with:

  • Mild fatty liver
  • Elevated liver enzymes

That was my signal to dig deeper.

To be honest, I was upset but I didn't want to come from a place of fear — but from a place of understanding what my body actually needed in that season.

So I shifted.

I started focusing on:

  • A more Mediterranean-style, nutrient-dense approach
  • Greater variety in whole foods
  • Strategic carbohydrates from single-ingredient sources like potatoes, squash, berries, and green apples

And I began exploring tools that support liver health more directly—including TUDCA.

That combination made a difference.

Enter TUDCA: a bile acid with powerful metabolic effects

TUDCA (tauroursodeoxycholic acid) is a naturally occurring bile acid produced in small amounts by the body.

It plays a role in:

  • Breaking down fats
  • Supporting bile flow
  • Protecting liver cells
  • Supporting overall cellular health

But what’s really interesting… is what research is showing beyond basic liver support.

TUDCA + insulin resistance (this is where it gets interesting)

In human research, individuals with insulin resistance who supplemented with TUDCA showed a meaningful improvement in insulin sensitivity in both the liver and muscle tissue.

Why this matters:

Insulin resistance is one of the main drivers of:

  • Midsection weight gain
  • Fatty liver
  • Slower metabolism

So improving insulin sensitivity means you’re addressing a root cause—not just chasing symptoms.

How TUDCA works (in simple terms)

One of TUDCA’s key roles is reducing something called cellular stress (often referred to as ER stress).

Think of this as “overwhelm” inside your cells.

When that stress is high:

  • Cells don’t respond well to insulin
  • Fat accumulates more easily in the liver
  • Inflammation increases

TUDCA helps your cells function more efficiently—like taking pressure off the system.

The result:

  • Better insulin signaling
  • Less fat buildup in the liver
  • Improved metabolic function

TUDCA and fatty liver

Research suggests TUDCA may:

  • Reduce liver fat accumulation
  • Improve bile flow
  • Support gut-liver communication
  • Lower inflammation

It’s also been shown to help improve markers of liver health, including elevated liver enzymes in some cases.

Let’s be clear: this is not a magic pill

TUDCA can be incredibly supportive—but it works best when paired with the fundamentals:

  • Reducing or eliminating alcohol
  • Strength training (your metabolic engine)
  • Managing carbohydrate intake appropriately
  • Prioritizing sleep and stress regulation

Think of it as supporting the terrain, not replacing the work.

How to take TUDCA (simple and effective)

If you decide to incorporate TUDCA, consistency matters more than complexity.

A simple approach (and what I personally do):

  • 2 capsules per day
  • 1 after breakfast
  • 1 after dinner

Taking it with meals supports bile flow when your body is actively digesting fats—this is when your liver and gallbladder are already working.

Simple. Sustainable. Effective.

If you’re considering TUDCA… quality matters

Not all supplements are created equal—and this is especially true with something like TUDCA.

Because it directly supports liver function and bile flow, purity matters.

When I choose supplements (for myself and what I share with you), I look for:

  • Third-party testing
  • Transparency in sourcing
  • No unnecessary fillers or contaminants

One company I personally trust is LifeBlud.

They’re a small, quality-focused company that:

  • Is cGMP certified
  • Tests for heavy metals and chemical contaminants
  • Prioritizes transparency in their formulations

That combination is rare—and important.

If you’re exploring TUDCA as part of your metabolic and liver support strategy, this is a brand I feel good about recommending.

Why this matters for midlife women

During and after menopause:

  • Insulin sensitivity often declines
  • Fat storage shifts (especially around the abdomen)
  • Metabolic flexibility decreases

Which means…

Supporting your liver becomes foundational—not optional.

And yet, most women are never told this.

A StrongHer perspective

This is why your approach needs to shift in midlife.

It’s not about:

  • Eating less
  • Doing more cardio
  • Fighting your body

It’s about:

  • Supporting metabolism
  • Building muscle
  • Improving insulin sensitivity
  • Nourishing your physiology

TUDCA is simply one tool in that bigger picture.

If your body feels like it’s not responding the way it used to…

It’s not broken as much as it may feel that way

It’s asking for a different strategy.

And sometimes, the missing piece isn’t more effort—

It’s better support at the cellular level.

If you’re ready to take a smarter, more strategic approach to your metabolism in midlife…

That’s exactly what we build inside StrongHer (online coaching for women 50+).

THE ENZYME OF LIFEWhat a Broken Refrigerator Taught Me About Aging My refrigerator stopped working last week. I had to find a quick solution so my food wouldn't go bad. As luck would have it, the apartment directly across from me was empty and being renovated, so my building manager said I could use the refrigerator there for the time being. Living in a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with two other people can make life... how shall I say?... a little too close for comfort with no...
