What If Sound Could Help Restore Calm in Midlife?

Tuning Into Calm: Exploring the Power of Frequency, Sound & the Midlife Nervous System

Hi Reader,

Over the past few years, I’ve become increasingly fascinated by the role sound and frequency play in the nervous system, emotional health, and overall sense of balance. This feels especially relevant for women in midlife, when hormonal shifts can make the nervous system more reactive and stress harder to “shake off,” even when we’re doing all the right things.

Back in 2020, I was preparing to take a certification in Biofield Tuning, a sound-based modality that uses tuning forks calibrated to specific frequencies measured in hertz (Hz). While circumstances at the time prevented me from completing the certification, my interest in this work never faded—and neither did my belief in its potential.

Hertz is simply a unit of measurement that tells us how many times something vibrates per second. When you strike a tuning fork, it produces a specific frequency—528 Hz, 174 Hz, 144 Hz, and so on. Each frequency interacts with the body and nervous system in its own way. Sound-based practices like Biofield Tuning work with the understanding that we are not just physical beings, but energetic ones as well, surrounded by what’s often called the human biofield.

This biofield extends beyond the physical body and holds information from our lived experiences—emotional, physical, and even generational. You’ve probably sensed this before without having words for it: walking into a room and immediately feeling tension, or meeting someone whose presence feels calming or unsettling. These impressions aren’t imagined; they’re part of how we perceive subtle information all the time.

For many midlife women, this can show up as feeling “on edge,” struggling with sleep, feeling emotionally reactive, or noticing patterns that seem to repeat themselves—often not because something is wrong, but because the nervous system is carrying unprocessed stress and asking for more support.

One of the key principles behind tuning fork work is sympathetic resonance. When a tuning fork is activated near the body, it doesn’t impose change—it reflects information back. The sound of the fork interacts with the body’s energy field, and if there is stress, emotional charge, or unresolved experience held in the biofield, that incoherence can be heard in the way the fork sounds.

For example, if someone experienced a significant emotional event at age 17—such as their parents divorcing—and that experience was never fully processed, the body may still carry an energetic imprint of that moment. When a tuning fork interacts with that area of the biofield, the sound may waver or feel distorted. As the body begins to release and integrate that experience, the sound of the fork naturally becomes clear again. A clear tone reflects coherence—a return to neutrality and harmony.

This is the elegance of the process. The body leads. The sound simply mirrors what’s ready to be resolved.

Lately, I’ve personally been spending time with the 528 frequency, often referred to as the “love” or “repair” frequency. Research in sound and energy medicine points to 528 Hz as uniquely harmonious, appearing in nature and in advanced scientific applications involving light resonance and even gold at the nano level. In traditional solfeggio scales, it has long been associated with balance and restoration.

What I notice personally—and what emerging research suggests—is that listening to music or sound tuned to 528 Hz can gently support the nervous system. Studies have linked this frequency to reduced stress markers like cortisol, improved emotional well-being, and even improved cell health in laboratory settings. Supporting the nervous system is especially important in midlife, when estrogen changes can influence sleep quality, heart rate variability, digestion, and emotional regulation.

One simple way to explore this work is by using a tuning fork at home, particularly to support the vagus nerve, which plays a central role in calming the stress response. Even gentle use—near the ears, heart center, or along the neck—can help signal safety to the nervous system and invite the body into a more relaxed, regulated state.

I want to be clear that I’m not an affiliate of Biofield Tuning or any tuning fork company. I’m simply sharing something I genuinely believe in and find valuable. If you’re curious, I encourage you to explore this work, listen to frequency-based music, or consider purchasing a tuning fork for personal use. If you're interested in buying a tuning forks or set, the BiofieldTuning website makes very high quality forks. There's lots of great information there in general.

A Gentle Reminder

Midlife isn’t about fixing what’s broken. It’s about restoring harmony, honoring the stories your body carries, and giving your nervous system the support it deserves. Sometimes the most powerful shifts happen not through force, but through resonance—allowing the body to remember its own capacity for balance and calm.

Here’s to starting from coherence, not chaos.

Many blessings to you for abundant health, happiness and wellbeing ~
