Midlife Taught Me Something Surprising About Food & Hormones

Food as Medicine: Finding Balance in a Confusing Landscape

Hi Reader,

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the diet industry. There’s no shortage of books, programs, and “expert” advice on how to lose weight, reduce inflammation, or follow the latest trendy plan. Some of this information is well-researched and genuinely helpful—but for the average person without a background in nutrition or biochemistry, it can feel overwhelming to separate the wheat from the chaff. How do you know what truly supports your body versus what’s just clever marketing?

Food is universal. It’s something we all rely on to survive and thrive. Most of us can agree that food should be whole, minimally processed, organic when possible, and sourced with care. Unfortunately, in today’s world, that ideal is often far from reality. There’s a growing grassroots movement to improve our soil health and reduce chemical sprays on crops here in the U.S., and for good reason. Industrial agriculture practices, along with the widespread use of hormones, vaccines, and grain-based diets to rapidly fatten livestock, have drastically changed the nutritional quality of our food. Politics often drive these systems—and ultimately, it’s the consumer who pays the price with their health.

That’s why it’s so important to know where your food comes from if you want to truly optimize your well-being. By the time we reach our late forties and beyond, most of us have accumulated some wear and tear in our bodies. It often shows up as inflammation in the joints and tendons, changes in energy levels, or the slow onset of chronic conditions.

This is why I emphasize lifestyle choices as the foundation of vibrant health—and food is the #1 pillar. So many chronic issues can be improved or even eliminated when we return to a cleaner, more intentional way of eating that supports health at the cellular level. Choosing high-quality, nutrient-dense foods isn’t just about avoiding disease; it’s about creating the conditions for your body to thrive at every stage of life.

⚖️ Finding the Right Balance

There’s so much conflicting dietary advice out there—vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, keto…the list goes on. And while each of these approaches may offer benefits to some, there’s no one-size-fits-all diet, especially for women transitioning through menopause and beyond. Hormonal shifts during this time change how our bodies handle blood sugar, making nutrition more nuanced and individualized.

I’ve experimented with Carnivore, Keto, and now mostly low-carb. Even when you’re “doing everything right”—eating clean, avoiding seed oils, choosing organic, buying wild fish, grass fed and grass finished beef, loading up on greens, filtering your water, and cutting out sugar—sometimes things still happen. Maybe it’s stress, maybe it’s environmental, or maybe it’s just your body adapting. It can drive you bonkers if you try to control every detail.

Through two and a half years of biohacking my own diet, I’ve learned that what works for me is somewhere in the middle—not overly extreme in any direction. I’m not a strict carnivore, and I’m not fully keto. I follow what I call the 90–10 rule: 90% of the time, I eat in a way that supports my health and energy, and 10% of the time, I allow space for flexibility. If I want a slice of pizza once in a blue moon, that’s okay. That balance has been key to both my health and my sanity.

🌿 Three Simple Ways to Let Food Be Your Medicine This Week

  1. Choose one source of your food more intentionally. This could mean buying pasture-raised eggs from a local farm, visiting a farmers’ market, or simply reading ingredient labels more closely.
  2. Focus on blood sugar stability. Pair high quality protein and healthy fats with low carbs that come from the ground like acorn squash, and avoid grazing all day to keep insulin balanced.
  3. Adopt your own “90–10 rule.” Prioritize clean, nourishing foods most of the time, and give yourself permission to enjoy flexibility without guilt.

👉 The goal isn’t perfection—it’s creating a sustainable way of eating that supports your body through every season of life.

Many blessings to you for abundant health, happiness and wellbeing ~
