The Healing Secret Inside an Avocado Pit Hi Reader, Around here, when I say “recipe,” it doesn’t always mean something for the dinner table. Sometimes it’s a blend, infusion, or creation you can use on your body, skin, or overall wellbeing. This week’s recipe takes something most of us toss—the avocado pit—and turns it into a soothing liniment for joint and muscle pain. 🥑 Why the Pit?Avocado pits are rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidants. According to a 2022 review in Frontiers in Pharmacology, extracts from avocado seeds show promising:
That makes them especially interesting for midlife women who want natural alternatives to chemical-laden creams and gels. If you've been reading my newsletter, a few months ago I wrote about DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) and how you can make your own anti-inflammatory tincture that's safe and without harmful ingredients [i.e chemicals]. In case you missed that newsletter, here's a quick review of DMSO: It's a colorless liquid used as a powerful solvent. DMSO is a natural substance that is produced by trees and is obtained through the processing of wood pulp. Over the years, DMSO has been the subject of numerous studies, and many researchers have found that it has many potential health benefits. For a deeper dive, watch this video from naturopathic doctor, Amanda Vollmer. I wanted to share a second analgesic liniment recipe because it doesn't involve ordering the DMSO and waiting for it to come in the mail. You can just go to the grocery store to buy an avocado and make it right away. Just make sure the avocado is ripe. OTC Analgesics RisksYes, of course you can just go and by an anti-inflammatory cream or gel at the drug store but you're really not supporting the body's natural healing mechanisms. Can they work? Yes, they often provide relief but for long term use for chronic conditions like tendonitis, I'd recommend a more holistic protocol as well as getting to the root cause of why you have inflammation in the first place. That's another post, but for now, let's review some of the ingredients in many over the counter pharmaceutical analgesics. Here's a few ingredients in OTC analgesics to be wary of:

After 7 days, your liniment is ready. You can leave the pit in or remove it. It will last a long time if kept in a dark, cool spot.
To use:
This is for external use only. Avoid broken skin, and do a quick patch test to make sure your skin tolerates it well. Also, this is not medical advice. If you are experiencing pain and/or inflammation that hasn't resolved within 2 or more weeks, seek the care of your primary care physician for a full evaluation.
✨ The next time you slice an avocado, think twice before tossing the pit—you may be throwing away one of nature’s hidden remedies.
